“I was very excited because I didn’t know what to expect!” Leon Will revealed in an exclusive interview with sports buzzer LN. Since the summer of 2021, which is coming to an end, the 19-year-old, who spent almost his entire youth career at VfB Lübeck, has been on a football scholarship in the USA – more precisely at the University from Maine to Fort Kent. This place is not far from the border with Canada.
Lübecker Leon Will: “Here in America there is already a strong focus on the field of fitness!”
In this university, he combines his studies in business management with his career as an active player. With the college team “UMFK Bengals”, he even reached the final of the USCAA-League, a league for slightly smaller college teams, that year. There, Will and Co. narrowly failed and had to draw the short straw on penalties. Lucas Will’s brother, who is currently active for Optik Rathenow in the Regionalliga Nordost, reports on the big difference between the goals of German and American football: “Here in America there is already a strong focus on the area of fitness , whereas in Germany, the focus is more on the tactical and playful domain.
Leon Will clashes at UMFK Bengals college side – 15 mins plus overtime in Finals
However, Leon Will, who could also get credit for the business management degree in Germany, had to work hard in the first six months of his football scholarship to qualify for the league seasons. “Coaches here actually tend to rely on long-time and more experienced teammates. It was really difficult for me to have a chance.” But his football training at VfB Lübeck seems to have paid off, because even in the grand final Will was substituted 15 minutes before the end of regular time – to shoot a penalty in the important penalty shoot-out, but in the end he didn’t dare: “In fact, I was supposed to take a penalty, I was already on the coach’s note. But shortly before, I had missed a penalty in training, so I didn’t want to take responsibility for that.”
“In American colleges, university times are based on practice times!”
All in all, the playmaker, who turns 20 in January, can look back on an exciting first semester in the United States: from basic improvement in his English language skills to a successful start in college (” In the first half, I was happy with a lot of good grades” ) to his football development. “In American colleges, university times are based on training times. The importance of football is clearly high and special attention is paid to ensuring that college and football do not overlap, ”reports Will, who raves about traveling away from home and how to getting there: “We sometimes flew to games – that’s a very special feeling.
Business studies or training with the police? Football scholarship schemes are still open
Leon Will will spend Christmas and the start of the New Year 2022 with his family in Dissau. He won’t return to America until mid-January to spend his second semester there and soak up some more exciting times. In the summer of next year he will then return to Germany. Will either wants to continue his studies in business administration with the two semesters of business management for credit, or start an apprenticeship in the police. “I don’t know yet exactly what I will decide.” And maybe the “Lübecker Jung” will then sign again with a club in the LN region – we can keep an eye on it…
