History, main models and curiosities

It is practically impossible to imagine ourselves without a telephone in our lives, time has passed and with this it has gained more and more space in society. On March 10, the phone turned 146 years old.

The device appeared unexpectedly, by surprise, with the idea of improving telegraph transmissions, a communication device at the time. At that time, no one imagined what would become of the telephone.

first phone

In 1876, scientist and inventor Alexander Graham Bell solved the problem of the telegraph which only allowed one message at a time. What many don’t know is that the inventor realized that it would be possible to convey more than one message through music. At this time he named it multiple telegraph, which would be the telephone of the time.

The first device worked in a very basic way, so you listened or talked, you couldn’t do both at the same time. He had a wooden box which was his battery. It arrived in Brazil a year after its creation, in 1877, and was made especially for Dom Pedro II. It was installed in the Imperial Palace of São Cristovão located in Quinta da Boa Vista, today National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, and was connected to the ministerial houses, which was the first Brazilian telephone line.

Going a little further in 1904, the second model was created. Its appearance divided opinion, it featured a mouthpiece mounted on top of the holder, as well as a receiver that the wearer held to the ear. To place the call, it was by a crank, and an operator terminated the call. This type of model required installation near a station housing the bell to announce incoming calls and the electrical circuits (capacitor, induction coil, signaling generator, connection terminals) to connect the device to the telephone network. Which was not at all comfortable and new projects for the device were already beginning.

Public telephone

Over time, phone models have evolved. At that time, the impact of globalization on people’s lives was noticeable, they spent more time on the streets than at home. With this in mind, public telephones arrived in Brazil in 1972. Its egg shape attracted a lot of attention, but what many do not know is that it was an alternative to bring more privacy during calls. The devices were scattered throughout the cities, making it easier for people to access.

It is important to point out that the public telephone had letters to allow it to be used in the same way as we did with cell phones which did not have a QWERTY keyboard.

Cordless phone

Even though people spend more time on the streets than at home, there was still an interest in having the device indoors. This is why the telephone went through several evolutions until it reached the cordless telephone.

Created in 1980, it arrived to make your job easier. The creation also marked a technological leap for the time, as it allowed people to walk within a radius of distance while talking on the phone. It had a base plugged into an outlet and a telephone connection.

Remember that, until the 1980s, people who had a telephone network had good financial conditions, considering that such a device at home meant status in the neighborhood. In comparison, the value of a telephone set was the same as that of a new car.

Even with so many models, people still lacked a cell phone. With this in mind, the mobile phone has arrived to change everything. A milestone in the 90s, the famous brick is launched as the first mobile phone in Brazil, created by Motorola. But its value was not so accessible… if it was today, its value would reach R$15,000. This made landline phones more popular and it is common for lower middle class people to have one at home. It should be remembered that its name refers to the very large size that has always attracted a lot of attention, and that it contained a screen that allowed the numbers to be seen.

Time has passed and with it the possibility of having a complete device in your hands has increased. In 2007, Apple launched the first smart phone (smartphone). The company revolutionized and launched the iPhone, a touchscreen device with its own operating system.

The device was known as a handheld, with Wi-Fi, 2 MP camera, Bluetooth and other tools. Many people do not know it, but the copy-paste tool, which is a basic functionality of smartphones today, has only been implemented in future versions of the iPhone. Due to the success of the iPhone, the use of smartphones has polarized from a luxury item to something essential.

Evolution of smart phones

And finally, in 2011, the most advanced mobile phones arrive with their own characteristics. At that time, several operating systems were released, with the capacity for several applications. In addition, most mobile phones already support Internet connection, and the photos taken with the camera have better definition. This shifted the focus away from the iphone, allowing people with less money to own a smartphone.

Current hours
