(Pocket-lint) – Meta updates WhatsApp with the ability to let you easily transfer your chat history from Android to iPhone. Previously, it only allowed to move chats from iPhone to Android. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the change in a post on Facebook, responding to longstanding complaints about the difficulty of migrating phone data between the two mobile operating systems. Here’s everything you need to know about how to transfer WhatsApp conversations between your phones, whether you’re using Android or iPhone.

How to Transfer WhatsApp Chats from Android to iPhone

To get started, you need to use Apple’s Move to iOS app. It helps Android users to move their contacts, calendar, SMS and now WhatsApp chats to iPhone.

  1. Download the Move to iOS app on your Android phone.
  2. Start setting up your new iPhone or reset iPhone.
  3. Select the “Move Android Data” option.
  4. Follow the steps in the Migrate to iOS app in your Android app.
  5. When your iPhone is fully set up, open the WhatsApp app.
  6. Log in with the same phone number.
  7. Your pre-existing Android chat history should appear.

There are caveats regarding WhatsApp’s Android to iPhone chat transfer capability.

  • The process only works with new or factory reset iPhones.
  • To initiate a chat data transfer, you will need to run:
  • Android 5 or higher on your Android device
  • iOS 15.5 on your iPhone
  • If you already have a pre-existing iOS chat history, the imported Android history will overwrite it.

In fact, if you migrate from iPhone to Samsung Android device, you can transfer your chat history, account information, profile picture and settings. You just can’t forward the calls.

    1. Reset your Samsung device.
    2. Open the Smart-Switch app on your Samsung device.
    3. Connect your iPhone to your Samsung device via a USB-C to Lightning cable.
    4. Select all the apps and data you want to transfer, including WhatsApp.
    5. When prompted, scan the QR code displayed on the phone screen.
    6. The QR code should open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
    7. Press the Start button to continue data transfer.
    8. Now you can finish setting up your Samsung device.
    9. Once done, open WhatsApp and sign in using the same iPhone number.
    10. Press the Import button to complete the process.
